Biomass and heat trade statistics September of 2022

As the heating season approaches, we will be publishing statistics and information on the preparation for the heating season in these monthly trade statistics reviews.

PREPARATION FOR HEATING SEASON

  • Compared to the demand for biomass in 2021 during the heating season, currently 37% of biomass demand is agreed for the winter. If we evaluate the preparation of biomass for the first half of the heating season, then 57% of biomass is prepared according to last year’s demand in the same period. Last year, 51% of the required amount of biomass was prepared for the first half of the heating season.
  • In 2022 the winter weighted price (46.49 Eur/MWh) is 101% higher compared to the last season (23.14 Eur/MWh). Looking at the price difference comparing counties, the biggest price difference can be seen in Curonian Spit (185%) and Klaipėda county (148%). The smallest price difference is in Šiauliai (86%) and Marijampolė counties (70%).

BIOMASS AUCTION STATISTICS

  • BWCS (Baltpool Wood Chips SPOT) LT index value reached 46.17 Eur/MWh. Compared to the August value, the index increased by 2%, and compared to the results of the same period last year, the index value is 135% higher.
  • The total amount of biomass delivered, compared to July, increased by about 189% to 509,230 MWh. Transactions in September show light preparation for the upcoming heating season – 58% of the total volume is long-term contracts, the delivery of which is expected during the heating season. Compared to the corresponding period last year, the amount of biomass delivered is 36% higher.
  • The average price of short-term transactions concluded in Latvia was 49.28 EUR/MWh.
  • The average price of short-term transactions concluded in Estonia was EUR 32.00/MWh.

HEAT AUCTION STATISTICS

  • In September 2022, an auction was held for the purchase of heat quantities for October 2022.
  • The weighted average heat purchase price reached 6.20 ct/kWh and was 35% higher than the heat supplied for the previous month (4.59 ct/kWh). Compared to the results of the same period last year, the price is 170% higher (2.30 ct/kWh).
  • For the month of October, the amount of heat purchased amounted to 392,253 MWh – this is more than double the amount of heat purchased for the month of September, and compared to the results of the same period last year, the amount of heat purchased decreased by 11%.
  • Sellers offered to sell 601,849 MWh of heat at the auction – this is 94% more than the heat supply in September. Compared to 2021 the amount of heat offered for sale at auctions for the month of October decreased by 8%.
